Aquitaine is the third largest and one of the greatest historic regions in France. It is composed of the five departments of Dordogne, Pyrénées-Atlantiques, Lot et Garonne, Landes and Gironde. The Aquitaine‘s landscape is very diverse and fulfills most of traveling desires: from foothills and mountains to sandy beaches, from vineyards to foodie markets, from picturesque villages and historical towns to forests and wonderful nature valleys.
Although Dordogne region does not have sandy beach landscape it has its own uniqueness. It is “The Other Chateau Country” with more than 1,500 castles in the region, it has the world’s most brilliant prehistoric art and it is also said „If a Frenchman's heart lives in Paris, his stomach resides in the Dordogne Valley“.
The best time to visit Dordogne for camping is from April to October. Springtime brings warmth and the nature gets fresh and full of flowers. Summer, especially August, gets busy and very hot. It is recommended to choose early autumn instead, from September to October, when the heat and crowds starts to mellow and grape harvest begins.
